The book is addressed to all doctors who want to open their own practice. In the past, many doctors simply worked on salary, often for large group practices. Many of the large group practices of past years went bankrupt. Consequently, many doctors were robbed of their salaried jobs. Instead, they had to contemplate hanging up their proverbial shingles. Faced with such a decision, many wished they had been taught something about starting and running an office. Unfortunately, they were not. Now they are trying to muddle though. Many make mistakes, some of them grave, resulting in financial collapse.
If you are looking to open an office, this book helps you understand the principles of running a practice. It is meant to be practical and show you what works and what does not. All too often books simply list some options and offer no help with the choosing. This book gives you weighted advice. Real life experience shows that some choices are preferable to others. It is based on the author’s experience as a practicing doctor and as a teacher of practice management. The book takes a step-by-step approach. From residency it takes the readers through the first few years of their careers to the point when a decision is made to open a practice. Then it describes the necessary steps to opening day. First, the basic issues are addressed, such as financing, rent, coding, hiring personnel, contracting, computerized medical records and malpractice insurance. Then, business strategies are discussed. In the final part of the book, some of the more complex issues are touched upon, such as money management and the influence of outside factors on a doctor’s career. A chapter is dedicated to some typical business encounters for the doctor in private practice. Finally buying a practice is discussed.
